Can Upper Back Muscles Affect the Lower Back?

Over the past weekend, I was asked a couple of questions on Facebook. The first was what stretching exercises can I do as I spend too much time at a desk and my neck hurts? The second was can upper back muscles pain affect the lower back? These two questions are quite well linked and I’ll answer them both here.

So firstly, we’ll answer the question on how sitting at a desk can affect the neck and back and what can be done to correct this. The primary reason for back and neck problems from desk sitting is mostly due to gravity. As gravity weighs on us, its effect is to compress the joints which in turn can generate pain. The proper posture for sitting at a desk is to sit upright with head up. For this, your computer would need to be at eye level. This helps your back and neck and the chances of getting in too much pain from this is small.

What Back Pain Options are Available?

At Back Pain Relief Center here in Myrtle Beach, the majority of the patients we see are with back conditions (which makes sense as it’s part of our name). We’ve helped many people out of pain, but even if we can’t help them ourselves, we do refer on to the most appropriate care for their backs. Sometimes what we do cannot help and they need further treatment. The majority of patients we see have back problems due to decompression. So their joints are decompressed due to an injury, trauma, degeneration, age, poor posture or simply age.

Chiropractic has Taken the World by Storm

Did you know that there are over 100,000 chiropractors practicing around the world? This includes your Myrtle Beach Chiropractor too! Chiropractic care has been proven to be successful because of its low risk rates, especially compared to pain meds and surgery. Just in our Myrtle Beach practice, we have helped hundreds of people out of pain and back into their daily routines.

Let’s take a look at some studies which back this information up.

  • The word ‘chiropractic’ comes from the Greek words cheir (hand) and praktis (to do). Together, it means ‘done by hand.’
  • After medical and dentist, chiropractors are the third most common field of doctor.
  • 27 million adjustments are done yearly in the world. This means that one million adjustments are done per day, 125,000 adjustments are done by year, 125,000 adjustments are done per hour, and 2,100 adjustments are done per minute!
  • A lot of sports professionals use chiropractic care. Every NFL team has a chiropractor who treats the players for any injuries.

Check out these stats:

  • In medical treatment, 56 percent of patients saw a 30 percent decrease in pain over a four week treatment period. 94 percent of chiropractic patients saw this same amount of 30 percent pain reduction over the same four week period.
  • Medicare would save 84 million dollars per year if patients saw a chiropractor instead of a doctor.
  • Chiropractic care risks are very low, where as pain killers are proven to be very dangerous.

It’s pretty clear that treatment for back pain should probably start with a chiropractor. No invasive or pain killers, but conservative care that looks to solve the cause rather than the symptoms.

Is Cracking Joints the Only Way Out of Pain?

Cracking and chiropractors go hand in hand. This alone puts many people off visiting a chiropractor because they think that all chiros do is crack bones. While it is true through manual manipulations, cracking is often heard, this isn’t the be all and end all of the treatment. And cracking isn’t what many people think it is anyway, as I’ll show later in this post.

So first things first, what are we hoping to achieve with chiropractic care?

The ultimate goal is to get you out of pain. Pain starts by the joints being compressed and then becoming dysfunctional. This could happen through injury, trauma or simply poor posture. As the joint compresses, it becomes dysfunctional, muscles around it react and tighten, scar tissue builds up as friction occurs which results in inflammation and pain. The goal of chiropractic care is to loosen the joints and enable proper range of motion which ultimately lessens inflammation and pain.

Why Should I Get an Accident Attorney if it Wasn’t My Fault?

We see many accident injury victims, both here in Myrtle Beach and up in our New Jersey office too. While each state has generally the same guidelines, there are nonetheless small differences. One thing that isn’t different and this is my opinion, is that you should get an accident attorney even if the accident wasn’t your fault. So why?

Insurance Companies Want to Pay as Little as Possible

If you feel the need to see a doctor for any reason that is to do with your accident, however minor, it is my opinion that you should get an accident attorney to help with your case. When in an accident which isn’t your fault, maybe you’ve been rear ended or they side swiped you their insurance company is responsible for your pain and suffering. BUT, insurance companies are not interested in paying out and will pay out as little as possible. That’s where an accident attorney will help as they can get the insurance company to pay what they should pay as opposed to what they will try and get away with paying.

How Back Pain Starts

What is Back Pain?

While there are many causes of back pain and many reasons why people have it, the vast majority of pain is due to simple wear and tear and dysfunction. 80% of all back pain conditions are due to the simple act of aging, over use, injuries and repetition. These are the conditions we see mostly and treat and manage. The remaining 20% have more significant issues that may relate to neurological disorders, diseases or other more complex defects, those issues we cannot treat and when we do see them, we then refer out to the appropriate specialist to help you further.

No matter which doctor you go to, whether it’s a chiropractor, medical doctor, orthopedic, or pain management, everyone has the same goal in mind: to get you out of pain, and to get you to feel better. There is a certain protocol of care that everyone does, which have some differences depending on who you see. The better you can understand that, the more that you can make better decisions on where you need to go with your particular treatment, since everyone responds to all types of care differently.

How I Manage Back Pain in Myrtle Beach

Hi! Your Myrtle Beach chiropractor here. Today, we are going to be discussing how I manage back pain in Myrtle Beach. We are going to go over some of the things we do to help my back pain.

A little background on me: I am 49 years old, and I have been lifting weights since I was about 10 years old. I’ve also been doing judo since I was 4 years old, and started doing jujitsu about 8 years ago. So to this day, this is what my schedule looks like: I lift weights three days a week, I do judo (a lot of throwing) three days a week, I do jujitsu, which is a lot of people tugging on my arms, surfing with my daughter, and on Sunday, my active rest is jogging. I am also on a plane once a week, which can be pretty uncomfortable. So clearly, I have a lot going on with my active life.

What is Cryotherapy Good for?

Cryotherapy seems to becoming more and more popular here in Myrtle Beach. I’m a big fan of it, I think it’s going to be a great treatment option as it will really help decrease inflammation and improve back and neck pain.

I’m often asked about whether you should ice or heat an area of pain, and as most back or neck pain seems to be from compression of the joints, ice is the better way to go. Why? Because it discourages blood away from the area and helps to decompress those joints. With heating an area of pain, while it feels great at the time, in the long run it offers little help to prolong the pain.

When Should You Consider Surgery for Pain?

When should you consider surgery for pain? Our goal at Back Pain Relief Center here in Myrtle Beach is to see you out of pain. Our focus is to examine you, discover the reason behind your pain and to treat it. Most of the time we achieve this goal within our practice, but there are occasions where we may need a multi disciplined approach to correct the problem. And then there’s situations where it would likely only be surgery that can correct the issue.
